Hospital care expenditures account for a very high share in Romania, the highest in the European Union, despite efforts made in recent years to consolidate this segment, presidential advisor Diana Paun told a specialist conference on Wednesday.
"The only goal is to ensure quality medical services. A needs-oriented health system must be based on flexible, adaptable mechanisms that encourage fair competition, efficiency and quality. (...) The private sector must be seen as an important source of care in the health sector. It had a significant role in promoting and raising awareness of the importance of prevention, a key area for the development of the health system through access to medical services and awareness campaigns," Paun told the conference organized by the Association of Private Medical Service Providers together with EY Romania, in partnership with the Senate's Health Committee.
The presidential advisor added that when the public system lacked the capacity to absorb human resources, it was the private medical sector that was able to offer gainful employment and attractive training programs that determined doctors to stay in the country and even made some of them return to Romania.
