The slash of illegal migration by almost 80% in the last two years is an unprecedented performance across Europe, Minister of the Interior Catalin Predoiu declared on Monday on the occasion of the commissioning of the new precinct of the Popesti-Leordeni Town Police.

"Upon taking office, I asked the Romanian Police to re-energize, to intensify drug-fighting efforts. This was achieved, the figures prove it. I asked for an intensification of the fight against organized crime rings, against human trafficking. Point checked, the numbers prove it," said Predoiu, stressing that all these targets were achieved thanks to intelligent and planned work. He specified, however, that not everything is perfect in terms of the functioning of the ministry's branches, of the Police, or as regards the criminal phenomena facing Romania.

"Last year, the ministry's investment budget was supplemented by approximately 150% compared to 2023 and I requested the acceleration of all programs for logistics equipment, or with the means you carry out your activity with, from special vehicles to forensic labs and so on, but also as regards the real estate infrastructure," Predoiu said.

The opening of the new Popesti-Leordeni Town Police precinct was also attended by Romanian Police Inspector General Benone-Marian Matei, Gendarmerie Inspector General Alin-Ionel Mastan, as well as by World Bank representative Alanna Simpson.
