UDMR urges PM Dancila to look into two-billion euro transfer to regional operational programme

Viorica Dăncilă

The Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) has sent a letter to Prime Minister Viorica Dancila asking for an analysis to be made into the reapportionment of 2 billion euros to operational programme regional development (POR) so that each county could access European funds worth 50 million euro, according to a UDMR press statement released on Wednesday.

"The permanent concern of UDMR is with the most efficient use of financial resources coming from EU programmes, and that is why a letter was sent to Prime Minister Viorica Dancila on the untapped potential of Romania; the letter includes suggestions for solving the situation," UDMR national chairman Kelemen Hunor told at a news conference in the western city of Arad on Wednesday.

According to the statement, UDMR proposes the transfer of 2 billion euros from operational programme large infrastructure (POIM) to operational programme local development.

"In the letter to the prime minister, UDMR has proposed that a detailed analysis of the current situation and the reapportionment of 2 billion euros from POIM to ROP should be made. This decision opens the possibility for each county in Romania to access 50 million euros on average in additional funds that will contribute to the funding of projects that are already prepared, are financially viable and can be implemented very quickly. By submitting to the European Commission (DG Regio) a well-grounded application in this respect, such a request will certainly be approved by the European Commission," according to the letter to Dancila.

At the same time, the letter indicates that the idea is included in the UDMR electoral planks for the incoming elections to the European Parliament.

"UDMR is convinced that Romania has an extra resource to finance the modernisation of all local communities, both under the cohesion funds and the Common Agricultural Policy. This idea is also included in the UDMR electoral planks for the incoming elections to the European Parliament."
