Defense Minister Ionut Mosteanu said on Wednesday that after the Constitutional Court (CCR) issues the reasoning for its unconstitutionality ruling on the judicial pensions bill, there will be two options - either to pass the law through Parliament, or have the government pledge responsibility for it.
"The working group itself doesn't mean anything. We must first wait for the Court's reasoning, after which we have two options: we either pass a law through Parliament, or we pledge responsibility before Parliament again. Each of these two options comes with benefits and drawbacks. (...) But we are waiting to see the Court's reasoning first. (...) From the CCR's release, we learn that there was an issue that the government did not wait for the full timeframe of 30 days for the opinion of the Superior Council of Magistrates, although the same CCR answered us that the deadlines do not need to be observed. (...) That's it, it's the CCR's decision and we respect it," Mosteanu declared in Parliament.
Asked if he agrees with a referendum on the topic of special pensions, he said that, if necessary, the Constitution will have to be amended.
"I think we will get this done otherwise, that is, by amending the law. (...) We see that there are some complicated barriers. I don't believe a referendum will be held after all, but if we do not get it done at all, we'll have to amend the Constitution at some point, in order to create some balance, because the society is tense. The injustice so many point the finger at if this issue isn't solved will create divisions and will maintain social nervousness. Our mission is to bring peace into society," the USR representative said.
