BNR (National Bank of Romania) Governor Mugur Isarescu on Tuesday is invited to the economic committee of the Senate to discuss the end-of-year report of the central bank and the method for establishing the ROBOR index for the persons who have loans contracted in lei, ALDE (Alliance of Liberals and Democrats) Senator Daniel Zamfir, head of the committee told AGERPRES on Monday.

"We have sent an invitation to the National Bank, we have two major topics to discuss: the first one is related to the year-end report of the National Bank, which points out that Romania's financial intermediation is very low, the lowest in Europe, actually, and with a gloomy outlook, in the sense that the financial intermediation is expected to further decrease. The second topic is related to the fixing procedure, namely the method used for establishing the ROBOR index for those who have loans contracted in lei," said Zamfir.
The ALDE Senator said that the Governor of the National Bank is obliged to come to the committee, given that the Parliament is the one that appoints the Board of Directors of the BNR.
"When I invited him at the end of last year, he told me it wasn't the right time, but I don't see why he won't come now, when a new parliamentary session is about to start. I also saw Mr. Suciu (the spokesman of the National Bank of Romania) saying that Mr. Isarescu has no obligation to come to the committee, when actually he does. We even have a court decision saying that he does have an obligation to come to the committee. However, leaving aside the court's decision,this would be an elementary democratic gesture - for the Romanian Parliament is the one that appoints the National Bank's Board of Directors, which means that the Romanian Parliament is entitled to ask for explanations, to ask for information, to clarify certain aspects that might appear during the mandate of the Board of Directors of the BNR. You can not bring the argument that you are not forced to come or do not want to come. I think that the Romanian society can no longer tolerate this type of primitive approach after the Kovesi episode: I don't want to come, I am a state within a state. This cannot be," said Daniel Zamfir.
According to him, invited to participate in the Tuesday hearing are also members of the Senate's budget-finance committee.
