Approximately 2,800 projectiles and ammunition from World War II, discovered in the soil of some lands, orchards or construction sites in Iasi County, have been destroyed, since the beginning of the year, by the pyrotechnics team of the County Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (ISU).
According to the ISU Iasi, since the beginning of the year there have been 184 clean-up missions, of which 175 aimed at cleaning up the ammunition and 9 their controlled destruction, in order to protect the lives and property of the citizens.
"In total, 2,790 items of ammunition were handled, from projectiles and grenades to grenade launchers and air bombs. Of these, 484 were projectiles, 88 grenades, three mines, 359 grenade launchers, five air bombs, 20 grenade launcher rounds and 1,831 other items of infantry ammunition. The cleared area covered 31,840 square metres, each intervention carrying with it the huge responsibility of keeping the community safe," ISU Iasi spokesperson Georgica Onofreiasa told AGERPRES on Thursday.
He added that the ISU Iasi pyrotechnics team are present almost daily in the field to search areas where ammunition could be hidden.
"With patience, skill and a deep respect for life, the pyrotechnics team searches forests, hills, gardens, yards and fields that still hide shells, grenades, mines and cartridges from the Second World War. Each projectile discovered is treated with the seriousness of a mission that can make the difference between life and death. Each mission is a step towards safety, but also an encounter with the past that still pulsates dangerously underground. Each clean-up mission was successfully completed by a professional team of pyrotechnicians," said Georgica Onofreiasa.
During the Second World War, Iasi County was an important military and administrative centre. In the first part of the war, it was an important command and logistics point for Romanian and German troops involved in the fight against the Soviets. Troop transports, military materials and railway convoys to the Eastern Front passed through the county. In 1944, when the Soviet front approached the borders of Romania, the area of Iasi county became a defence line, and the city of Iasi and its surroundings were the theatre of important battles.
