COVID-19 new cases record from pandemic's beginning, 19,685, in over 62k tests in past 24 hrs

As many as 19,685 new cases of people infected with SARS-CoV-2 were recorded in the last 24 hours, 7,603 more than the previous day, with more than 62,000 tests being performed, the Strategic Communication Group (GCS) reported on Tuesday.

It is a new record of the number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic in Romania. The previous one was 19,649 cases, recorded on Friday - January 21.

Of the new cases, 1,740 are in reinfected patients, tested positive for a period longer than 180 days after the first infection. In the last 24 hours, 20,524 RT-PCR tests were performed (10,828 based on case definition and medical protocol and 9,696 on request) and 41,539 rapid antigen tests.

As of Tuesday, 2,048,896 cases of infection with the novel coronavirus have been registered in Romania, of which 33,637 are in reinfected patients, tested positive for a period longer than 180 days after the first passage through the disease. According to GCS, 1,827,324 patients have been declared cured.

To date, 11,615,645 RT-PCR tests and 6,974,300 rapid antigen tests have been processed at national level. Apart from the newly confirmed cases, following the retesting of patients who were already positive, 1,336 people were reconfirmed positive with SARS-CoV-2.

As many as 44 deaths in patients infected with the novel coronavirus - 27 men and 17 women - have been reported in the last 24 hours, according to GCS. Of the 44 deaths, two were recorded in the age category 40 - 49 years, four in the age category 50 - 59 years, seven in the age category 60 - 69 years, 17 in the age category 70 - 79 years and 14 in the age category over 80 years. Moreover, 43 of the recorded deaths are of patients who had comorbidities, and a deceased patient did not have comorbidities.

Of the total 44 deceased patients, 34 were unvaccinated and ten vaccinated. The vaccinated patients were aged between the age groups of 40-49 years and over 80 years. All the vaccinated patients who died had comorbidities.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 59,632 people diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection have died in Romania.

Countrywide, as many as 7,094 people infected with SARS-CoV-2 are hospitalized in health facilities, of which 643 are children, the GCS says. According to the source, 650 patients are hospitalized in the ICU wards, 21 more than the previous day, and there are children. Of the 650 patients admitted to the ICU, 560 are unvaccinated.

According to the data available in the alerte.ms application, at national level, there are 1,833 ICU beds for COVID-19 patients, of which 453 in Bucharest.

Throughout Romania, 123,695 people confirmed with infection with the novel coronavirus are in isolation at home, and 6,905 in institutional isolation. Also, 85,839 people are in home quarantine, and 55 are in institutional quarantine.

Police and gendarmes applied, in the last 24 hours, 1,519 contravention sanctions, totaling RON 277,900, as a result of violating the provisions of Law 55/2020 on some measures to prevent and combat the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, informs GCS, Agerpres informs.
