Romania is present at the forefront of European and universal heritage through the richness of cultural diversity and through the passion and professionalism of numerous specialists, declared President Klaus Iohannis in the message sent on Monday during the European Summit of Cultural Heritage.

"I welcome the holding of the European Cultural Heritage Summit in Bucharest. We granted this event High Patronage with the conviction that our heritage and the specialists involved in its enhancement have a well-deserved place at the European level in terms of protecting and promoting cultural heritage. Europa Nostra defines itself as the European voice of cultural heritage, which represents the foundation on which the humanist spirit was built and the hope for understanding, dialogue and peace of our continent", stated Klaus Iohannis in the message, presented at the event at the Romanian Athenaeum by presidential adviser Sergiu Nistor.

According to the head of state, the European Cultural Heritage Summit is taking place in a context marked by a series of crises with a serious global impact on peace, security and the development of communities and humanity as a whole.

"In such a complicated period, monuments, museums, memorial houses, traditions and their keepers become all the more important to maintain as cultural landmarks of our fundamental values, to pass on to future generations. The Europe we inherited is a construct and a space of memory. The union in which we find ourselves today, with the prosperity and security we expect from it, rests more and more strongly on education, inter-culturality and the fruition of diversity. Cultural heritage has become an irreplaceable resource of prosperity and sustainable development. For the future of our Europe, culture is fundamental, because freedom and democracy are nourished from it", said the head of state.

In this context, Romania is present at the forefront of European and universal heritage through the richness of our cultural diversity and through the passion and professionalism of numerous specialists, he added.

"The awards that Europa Nostra has given to exemplary restorations in our country, as well as to the civic initiatives from which many of them were born, are an exhortation for the authorities not to hesitate to place our cultural treasure in a central place in the visions of development and to engage even more sustainably in its promotion as an unparalleled asset of competitiveness. I congratulate the laureates and the organizers and wish all the participants to have a moment of great visibility and consistency in favor of the cultural heritage of Europe", Iohannis concluded his message.

On Monday evening, at the Romanian Athenaeum, the European Heritage Awards ceremony, awarded by the European Commission (European Heritage Awards Ceremony 2024), takes place. On this occasion, two projects from Romania are also rewarded - the Saxon Church in Alma Vii, Sibiu county, and the Church of Saint Michael, Cluj-Napoca.

Also, during the ceremony, the winners of five Grand Prix awards and one Public Choice Award - worth 10,000 euros each - are announced.
