Romania has succeeded in developing, consolidating and deepening its strategic partnerships with the US in the centennial year of its Greater Union, Romania's Deputy Prime Minister Ana Birchall said in Washington on Wednesday.

According to a government press statement released on Thursday, Birchall attended a reception party extended by the Romanian Embassy in Washington for the celebration of the December 1,1918 Greater Union Centennial. The event was also attended by Jackie Walorski, a member of the United States Congress.

Birchall delivered a message from Romania's Prime Minister Viorica Dancila and the cabinet that highlighted the importance of the Greater Union Centennial.

"December 1, 1918 represents an important landmark in the history of Romania, as it marks the achievement of the long-sought objective of national unity. It is the holy date of our reunification as a nation, the moment when all the provinces in which the Romanians lived formed together Greater Romania," according to the message.

Birchall highlighted the contribution of Romanians abroad to the union, the efforts of the Romanian-American community organised in the National League of Romanians in the United States to promote the cause of national unity, and the importance of the support received at the time from US President Woodrow Wilson.

She also said that in the Greater Union Centennial year, Romania has managed to substantially develop its strategic partnership with the United States.

"Since taking office, I have devoted my efforts to furthering the strategic partnership with the US. In meetings with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Energy Secretary Rick Perry, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Wess Mitchell, as well as all other US officials, we have approached the importance that Romania attaches to the development and deepening of its strategic partnership with the US. 2018 has been a year in which the relationship between Romania and the US has been strongly consolidated, and this is the direction that the Government intends to further pursue," Birchall said.

At the same time, she sent a message to the Romanians. "I wish all of you a national day that opens your hearts and souls. A national day in which we can enjoy everything God has given us, in which one respects one another and honours the heroism of those who bequeathed us a special country, unique in the world. A national day in which to live and feel the celebration together! Happy birthday, Romania! Happy December 1, our national day, to all Romanians!."
