The National Red Cross Society (SNCR) on Thursday morning offered water and food to the crew of a Panama-flagged ship that has been at anchor in the Black Sea since the end of 2016 because of a rudder defect.

According to the Sulina Port Master's Office, the ship having 16 crew on board from Turkey, India and Azerbaijan, has been at anchor offshore in the Black Sea, 13 kilometers east of the entry to the Sulina seaway, since December 31, 2016 because of a rudder defect.

"Crew members tried to repair the defect on their own, but failed so far. A few days ago they reported they had only a small amount of food and water, so that on Thursday morning SNCR representatives offered them supplies for at least three days," head of the Sulina Port Master's Office Radu Andricencu told agerpres.

The ship, which was was headed for Ukraine, will be towed Thursday afternoon to the port to keep the crew out of harm's way as adverse weather is ahead.

The National Meteorology Administration issued on Thursday morning a Code Orange snow and strong blizzard advisory for Bucharest and 11 counties in the country south and east, including the Black Sea counties of Tulcea and Constanta.
