Gross Domestic Product stagnated in the first quarter of this year, compared to the previous quarter, and compared to the same quarter of 2024, GDP growth was 0.3%, according to provisional data (2) from the National Institute of Statistics, published on Thursday.
According to the INS, the seasonally adjusted series of the quarterly Gross Domestic Product was recalculated following the revision of the estimates for the first quarter of 2025, with no differences in growth rates compared to the version published in the Communiqué of June 6, 2025.
Thus, based on seasonally adjusted data, the estimated GDP for the first quarter of 2025 was 460.427 billion lei at current prices, in nominal terms, and in real terms, up 0.6% compared to the first quarter of 2024.
On a gross series basis, the estimated Gross Domestic Product for the first three months was approximately 375.774 billion lei at current prices, increasing, in real terms, by 0.3% compared to the first quarter of 2024.
The following sectors contributed in particular to the GDP growth in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the first quarter of 2024: construction (+0.4%), which recorded an increase in activity volume by 9.9%; Information and communications (+0.1%), which recorded an increase in activity volume by 0.9%; real estate transactions (+0.1%), which recorded an increase in activity volume by 0.8%; public administration and defense; social insurance in the public system; education; health and social assistance (+0.1%), which recorded an increase in activity volume by 0.4%; net taxes on product - their volume increased by 3.7 percentage points in the provisional version (2) compared to the provisional version (1), from 3.5% to 7.2%.
A negative contribution to GDP growth was recorded by industry (-0.5%), which recorded a decrease in activity volume by 3%.
By category of uses, compared to June data, the contribution of household final consumption expenditure fell from +1.3% to +1.1%, as a result of a decrease in its volume by -0.2 percentage points from 1.9% to 1.7%. As for individual final consumption expenditure of public administrations, its contribution fell from +0.5% to -0.4%, as a result of a decrease in its volume by -11.2 percentage points from plus 5.8% to minus 5.4%. Gross fixed capital formation (investments, ed.) had an upward contribution from +0.9% to +1.1%, as a result of an increase in its volume by +1.2 percentage points from 4.3% to 5.5%.
The budget for the current year is built on an economic growth of 2.5%.
