The unemployment rate stood at 5.7 percent in the 3rd quarter, decreasing in comparison to the previous quarter, when it stood at 5.9 percent, according to the data centralized by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
By genders, the gap between the two unemployment rates was 1.4 percentage points (6.3 percent for men compared to 4.9 for women), and by living area the gap stood at 1.3 percentage points (6.4 percent in the rural area, compared to 5.1 percent in the urban area). The unemployment rate reached the highest level (20.5 percent) among young people (15 - 24 years).
In the mentioned period, the employment rate of the working-age population, 15 - 64 years, stood at 63.1 percent, increasing by 1.3 percentage points compared to the previous quarter. The employment rate was higher for men (71.7 percent compared to 54.4 percent for women) and for persons living in urban areas (63.7 percent compared to 62.3 in the rural area). The employment-to-population ratio for people aged between 20-64 stood at 67.7 percent, with a difference of 2.3 percent compared to the national target of 70 percent, which was established in the context of the Europe Strategy 2020.
The employment rate of young people (15 -24 years) was 24.9 percent.
Romania's active population in the 3rd quarter of 2016 amounted to 9.144 million persons, with 8.625 million people employed and 519,000 unemployed. The number of employees stood at 6.241 million people, and the number of those falling in other categories stood at 2.384 million people.
