Ionuț Vulpescu, former Minister of Culture and longtime collaborator of President Ion Iliescu, shared an emotional tribute following Iliescu’s death. Vulpescu, who conducted the former president’s final biographical interview, said Iliescu passed away “at peace with the world and with himself.”
He announced that the last interview will be turned into a biographical film:
“The destiny of a man of the left has now moved to the heavens. Beyond the horizon, beyond human limits, beyond partisanship and tension. Where the other half of the paradox lies—one we cannot access, though we seem to borrow the divine attribute of omniscience when connected to TV and social media.”
Vulpescu added:
“This is not a death I can ever truly confirm. All I can say is that Mr. President departs in peace—with the world and with himself, with his hopes and disappointments. He goes calmly to the secular judgment of History and the spiritual judgment of God.”
He expressed gratitude for having had the chance to tell Iliescu how much he meant to him:
“I told him many times during his life—when people rarely express gratitude—what I owe him as a person, as a politician, and as a younger friend. I’m glad I told him that something essential from what he built will carry on. He thanked me for remaining the same Ionuț Vulpescu, the one who worked for Ion Iliescu for as long as he can remember—and will continue to do so as long as he lives.”
Vulpescu described Iliescu as:
“A living Marcus Aurelius, even in his twilight. I’ve never met a man more dignified before history—with all that is vibrant and all that is about to leave this world.”
He recalled their final moments together:
“It was hard when I held his hand for the last time, some time ago. And unbearable when he raised his hand and we said goodbye for the last time—without knowing it. A kind of passage between two worlds I’ll never forget.”
The interview they conducted on the show “Avangarda” was watched by millions and became the most viewed political and personal interview in recent years. A documentary film dedicated to Ion Iliescu will premiere tomorrow, featuring historical testimonies from presidents, prime ministers, athletes, and cultural figures.
Vulpescu concluded:
“The last barricade of a statesman. Farewell, Mr. President! Thank you! I will miss you deeply. May God forgive you and grant you rest.”
