Former Social Democrat MP Laura Vicol and her husband Vladimir Ciorba have been put in 30-day pre-trial detention in the Nordis property development fraud case.
The ruling was handed down on Wednesday by the Bucharest Court of Appeal.
According to the minutes released on the court's website, Nordis Group major shareholder Gheorghe Emanuel Postoaca, Cristian Nicolae Postoaca (shareholder and administrator with several companies in the Nordis Group), and the group's sales manager Florin Postoaca were also placed under pre-trial detention, while economic manager Sanda Raileanu, the group's accountant Oana Claudia Oprea and Bogdan Adalbert Saitos (shareholder and administrator) shall be investigated under house arrest.
Also, the judges ordered the placement under judicial control of human resources manager Gabriela Vasile, procurement manager and director Cristian Matei, and of George Marian Ivan.
The decision is not final, but it is enforceable.
The defense attorneys for some of those accused in this case declared in the courtroom that they will challenge the decision and will submit documents in support of the request, judicial sources told AGERPRES.
The charges in the case are the setting up of an organized criminal group, particularly serious embezzlement, money laundering, tax evasion, severely consequential fraud, determination in bad faith by the taxpayer of taxes, fees or contributions resulting in unlawfully obtaining of amounts of money as reimbursements or refunds from the general budget or compensations due to the general consolidated budget, all in a recurring manner.
Former President Traian Basescu's daughter Ioana Basescu, and former PSD deputy Andreea Cosma were charged with involvement in the Nordis affair as notaries, but they were let go and are investigated under judicial control.
The criminal investigation found that over 2019 - 2024, the leaders of the organized criminal group collected from clients - individuals or legal entities - through 5 trading companies, RON 957,000,000 (over EUR 195 million) in advance payments for bilateral purchase promise contracts, respectively purchase contracts (for apartments/parking lots and furniture).
