The Ministry of European Investments and Projects (MIPE) is implementing in partnership with the Health Ministry a prevention program targeting 670,000 vulnerable people through various types of screening, relevant minister Dragos Pislaru declared at the end of the conference launching a national initiative aimed at preventing diabetes and connecting rural residents to the healthcare system.
"We had an important event today, as part of the diabetes fighting campaign run by MIPE and the Health Ministry. We have 306 million euros in the health program that targets 670,000 vulnerable people for various types of screening, from breast cancer, cervix, prostate, liver diseases, other types of screening. The right direction is to have a prevention and screening campaign that is run with European funds, with national and with private funds," said the minister.
Referring to another program run by MIPE - the Education and Employment Program for the 2021 - 2027 programming period, which complements the one on prevention, Pislaru said that it also supports the infrastructure needed for the screening initiative, particularly through partnerships with community nurses. "It is a flagship program for integrated community services, bringing together social workers, community nurses, and school boards in 2,000 of Romania's 3,200 administrative units," he said. "These two initiatives reinforce each other. At MIPE, we are exploring how to best use EU-funded resources to strengthen prevention and screening practices."
The national initiative #NoDiabetes: Connecting Rural Romania to Health was officially launched on Wednesday at the headquarters of the Ministry of European Investments and Projects. Supported by Boehringer Ingelheim, the program is the first of its kind in Romania, integrating mobile healthcare, technology, education, and public policy to reconnect rural populations with the healthcare system.
Running from October 2025 to December 2026, the project is led by the Doctors' Caravan Association, a non-governmental organization with over a decade of experience in expanding access to medical services in rural areas.
Through this campaign, the association seeks to scale up a mobile health model already recognized at the European level as a best practice, aiming to establish it as a national standard.
