Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan will meet next week business executives to discuss steps to increase and diversify their production in order to support exports.

He said that Romania has economic sectors with great "growth potential", but which have not been sufficiently valued. He mentioned to the point the processing of agricultural produce and support for the agri-food industry, according to Agerpres.

"Next week I will have two meetings with the most important companies in this sector, to establish policies as clear as possible, to see what we can support them with to increase their production, to diversify their production, so that, on the one hand, we have more domestic production, but also to export this production. So, let's support our exports," the prime minister said on Friday at a news conference at the Government House.

The head of the government underlined the importance of investments in storage facilities and standardisation of agricultural produce from small farms, so that the production ends up being sold in large store chains.

"We import a good part of the products that are on the Romanian market today, in many sectors of activity, where we have the capacity to increase the capacity domestically, if we carry out policies to support this industry, to increase the capacity a lot in the coming years. An important area is to support our champions in this area to export their products, and from the meetings we had with the large commercial networks, we agreed that, just as they bring to Romania good quality products produced in other countries, they can do the same with our products, if they are competitive in neighbouring countries," said Bolojan.

He spoke up about attracting foreign investment, noting that such investment has contributed in recent years to the country's economic development through financing, technology and access to markets.

At the same time, he drew attention to the fact that Romania imports "a good part of the products" when it comes to medicines or animal feed. In this regard, he asked embassies to become "a point of support for the Romanian economy", including through steps to support the relocation of the activity of companies from abroad.

"In terms of medicines, over 90% of what is on our market is imported. In certain areas that seem insignificant - animal feed, chocolate - we have very few producers in Romania. An important element is to identify the large companies that are interested in relocating to Romania, to contact them directly and to offer them support so that they can relocate these productions to our country. And we can do that directly through our embassies, which should become a point of economic support for the Romanian economy, a point of support for our exporters, and not just to remain at the stage they have had so far."

Bolojan also mentioned the importance of a system of taxes that does not discourage investment. That is why he supported the reconsideration of the minimum turnover tax (IMCA).

"The IMCA, the turnover tax, is an element that I think needs to be reanalysed in such a way as to penalise those who really abuse transfer pricing, who do not want to pay taxes, but at the same time not to penalise investment because otherwise we discourage it from coming to Romania. Any formulas of bureaucratisation, simplification, obtaining permits, transparency come to support both foreign investment, but also the day-to-day activity of the companies operating in the Romanian economy today," Bolojan said.
