The communist regime in Romania is responsible for crimes, abuses, and the systematic violation of fundamental human rights and freedoms, and this is not merely a chapter of our recent history, but a painful and enduring reality, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated in his message conveyed on Thursday to the National Conference 'Romanian Communism'.

According to a release by the Institute for the Investigation of the Crimes of Communism and the Memory of Romanian Exile (IICCMER), the Prime Minister's message to the conference was conveyed by Deputy Prime Minister Oana Gheorghiu.

"The communist regime in Romania is guilty of crimes, abuses and the systematic violation of fundamental human rights and freedoms, and this is not a mere chapter of our recent history, but a painful reality. Many of us have lived through this painful reality. We can only heal this wound by an honest acknowledgement of the facts and through a lucid public memory. For those who lost their lives because of the regime, as well as for those who fought for freedom, we have a duty to keep their memory alive. A few days ago we marked 38 years since the Brasov anti-communist uprising - a moment that proved no system can permanently suppress the human longing for freedom. To younger generations, who did not live through those times, we must explain clearly and objectively what communism meant. It is a difficult process, because the suffering took various forms and was experienced differently by each individual," Bolojan said, according to the statement.

He cautioned against attempts to manipulate and distort the historical past.

"These deepen the wound and risk to erase the efforts made in recent decades. As the trivialization of the past becomes increasingly widespread, it is essential to focus on combating these phenomena and supporting social cohesion. Our efforts, as state authorities, representatives of academia and civil society, must take all of this into account and remain firmly grounded in the promotion of fundamental rights, freedoms, and democratic values," the Prime Minister stated.

He added that the development of the National Plan for Raising Awareness of the Crimes of Communism, coordinated by the Prime Minister's Chancellery and the Institute for the Investigation of the Crimes of Communism and the Memory of Romanian Exile is unfolding within this broader framework of remembrance, accountability, and democratic values.

"The plan will integrate the causes and mechanisms of communist repression, support education and research in the field and contribute to strengthening democratic resilience. It also aims to explain, in a critical and documented manner, how the dictatorship violated or annulled fundamental rights. The goal is not to impose an official version of the past, but to support citizens, young people in particular, to form their own critical instruments for historical analysis. Finally, I assure you that the Romanian Government remains firmly committed to advancing policies that preserve historical memory, while supporting education and research on the communist regime, as well as to promoting fundamental human rights and freedoms, democratic values and principles,'' Bolojan emphasized.

The Institute for the Investigation of the Crimes of Communism and the Memory of Romanian Exile, the National Council for the Study of Securitate Archives, the "Nicolae Iorga" Institute of History of the Romanian Academy and the Faculty of History of the University of Bucharest opened on Thursday at the Victoria Palace the series of events dedicated to the National Conference "Romanian Communism", now in its 14th edition.
