Education in Romania has been politicized by the way nominations were made at the county school inspectorates or at the leadership of some tuition units, Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos told the Parliament at Monday's 'Premier's Hour' debate on 'Problems of the education system.'
"Education has always been declared a government priority, successive reforms were initiated without being completed from one government to another. And when a stable regulated framework was set, such as the Law No 1/2011, it has been subsequently amended by repeated modifications or simply not enforced. These successive experiments left their mark on the contents and coherence of the Romanian education system. Like any other fields, education was also politicized by the way nominations were made at the leadership of the county school inspectorates or at the leadership of some education units. Without proposing at the beginning of its mandate yet another reform of the system, this Government approached with priority a series of important matters of implementation that were hampering or affecting the quality of the educational act," Ciolos said.
As for the school management and depoliticization, the prime minister said that contests are organized for the positions of inspector general, deputy inspector general and headmasters of the Teacher's House.
"We notice that in some counties nobody applies for a position, not even the current interims. Through the procedure we enforce, these interims wouldn't be able to continue their tenure if they don't get registered in the contest. Hopefully through these contests we will be able to clarify and stabilize on professional grounds the management of the school inspectorates," he added.
