Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said on Thursday that "if the number of MP seats were reduced to 300, nothing related to the parliamentary quality would happen," adding that as national leader of the National Liberal Party (PNL) he considers that he must respect his word given to the electorate in this regard, said Agerpres.

"There are several bills in Parliament that provide for the cutting of the number of MP seats. I became the PNL national leader a week before the parliamentary election, if we remember, in November. And one of the things I said, and I personally believe it, is that, if the number of MP seats were reduced, nothing would happen related to parliamentary quality. Of course, some would be better represented, others less represented. It is very important to reduce the number of MP seats in order to respect a normal weight, as it is today, of representation of minorities in Romania. But it would be abnormal if there is a pending bill and I am in Parliament and vote, after six months to change my mind. I think it is not fair play towards our electorate, towards what Romania expects. I'm not a populist, I don't think that if we have 300 MPs tomorrow in Romania, everything will change, but it's a form of respect for the electorate," the prime minister told B1 TV private broadcaster.

According to him, the substantive problem lies in the quality of the laws that Parliament brings up, and the formal problem, that of reducing the number of MP seats cannot be removed from the public agenda.

"If you've tried, if you've said something, it's good to keep your word and do it and at the same time it's a way to show them a minimum of solidarity, from my point of view. The fundamental problem is the quality of the laws that a parliament produces, the quality of the MPs in a parliament, because, after all, that is the purpose of Parliament and, of course, the general orientation that one parliamentary majority or another gives. These are the substantive problems, but this problem of form, which is the number of MPs, cannot at least be removed from the public agenda. There was a bill, the question was raised about how the parties vote. PNL said 'let's follow the commitments we have made'. Whether it passes, whether it does not pass, remains to be seen, but it is not a bill that is in the coalition protocol because we agreed at the beginning that what we should not include in the protocol what do not agree on . We agreed on certain things, we did them and after a month and a half you ended up with bills in Parliament that cancel what you have established," said Bolojan.
