"We are committed to ensure an efficient and pragmatic Presidency of the Council of the European Union," Prime Minister Dancila stated within the meeting, according to a release of the Government sent to AGERPRES.
According to the quoted source, the senior European officials are in Bucharest on a visit that is traditionally paid to the EU state which is preparing to take over the Presidency of the Council. The visit is included in "the dense calendar" of dialogue of Romania's Government with European partners, member states or European institutions, of the second semester of this year, the Executive mentions.
"Prime Minister Viorica Dancila reviewed the advanced stage of the internal process of preparing the future Presidency of the Council of the European Union that Romania will exercise in the first six months of the next year and expressed her appreciations for the support granted by the European Commission. The Executive head reconfirmed, on this occasion, Romania's commitment to guarantee an efficient and pragmatic Presidency of the Council of the European Union, able to respond to the challenges which the European Union is confronted with during this period," the release mentions.
The PM brought to mind Romania's assumed objective of placing the European citizens in the forefront of its activity, during the exercise of the Presidency of the EU Council, in a coherent effort to meet, through the results obtained, the expectations of over 500 million inhabitants of the Union. Moreover, Dancila underscored the necessity to maintain the unity of the member states, an idea which is also found in the slogan of the Romanian Presidency at the EU Council: "Cohesion, a common European value," the Government mentions.
According to the quoted source, within discussions also evoked was the special context in which Romania will exercise its mandate, whose dynamics will be marked by the debate regarding the future of Europe, the organisation of elections for the European Parliament in May 2019, the UK's withdrawal from the EU and the negotiations on the new multiannual financial framework.
According to the Executive, Martin Selmayr and Clara Martinez Alberola commended the stage of preparations made at the Gov't level for taking over and exercising the Presidency of the EU Council.
The PM's meeting with the senior European officials was followed by a meeting of the Government members dedicated to the preparation of Romania's Presidency of the Council of the EU, that the European officials were invited to attend.
Within this meeting and during the discussions that followed in the series of separate meetings of the EC representatives with a part of the Government members, there were also tackled the main European files undergoing negotiations at community level, which will feature on the agenda of the Romanian Presidency of the EU Council, the Gov't release also mentions.
