The population connected to the public water supply system reached 14.782 million people, representing 77.6% of Romania's resident population, an increase of 76,578 people compared to 2023, according to data the National Institute of Statistics published on Tuesday.

The increase was driven by the connection of the population to newly built water supply networks, the source shows.

At the level of development regions, in 2024, the highest share of the population connected to the public water supply system, as a percentage of the total resident population, was recorded in the Bucharest-Ilfov region (97.9%), followed by the South-East region (89.8%). The lowest connection rate was recorded in the North-East region (53.6%), followed by the South-Muntenia region (70.7%).

The total volume of water distributed exceeded three billion cubic metres, approximately 914.5 million cubic metres more than in 2023. The most significant increase was in agriculture, where the volume of distributed water rose by 660.6 million cubic metres.

The highest quantities of distributed water were recorded in the Buzau-Ialomita hydrographic basin (30.8%) and the Arges-Vedea basin (18.6%).
