Social Democratic Party (PSD) MEP Victor Negrescu said he voted on Sunday convinced that in order to heal Romania' it is necessary to have the possibility to do it in a democratic framework, where everyone's opinions are respected and the European path is not questioned.
"Irrespective of today's result, I voted with the conviction that in order to heal Romania, it is necessary, first of all, to have the possibility to do it in a democratic framework, where everyone's opinions are respected and the European path is not questioned. I don't want to live with the thought that we could have blocked the worst, no matter how small the chances are. (...) We voted so that on Monday we can start work again. We have much to rebuild under any circumstance. We have a whole Romania to reunite," Negrescu wrote on Facebook, agerpres reports.
He added that he respects the position of those who don't think like him and that he tried to understand it because this is the only way to have a serious discussion.
"This is where the dialogue must start and I am confident that we have in Romania so many people of value with whom we can regain the Romanians' trust in a better future for our country, for those at home and in the diaspora. Only one Romania," he said.
Victor Negrescu said that he voted on Sunday alongside his father.
"At the venerable age of over 70, he never missed a vote. He always told me that if so many Romanians died for this right, it must be exercised. Sometimes his favourites (and mine) won, sometimes they lost. He has his grievances. But he has remained consistent in his ideas of respect, professionalism and democracy. He wants a European Romania in which we enjoy rights, but he also very much wants our country to be able to be strong and dignified in its Western alliances. Today, as disappointed as he is with the post-December political class, he has come with me determined to oppose those who play with words and would be willing to cancel the freedoms his grandchildren enjoy," Negrescu added.
