Romanian tennis player Patricia Tig on Tuesday defeated US Julia Boserup 7-5, 6-0, in the last qualifying round for a berth on the women's singles main draw of the 6,993,450-USD of the Indian Wells Masters 2017.
Tig, 22, WTA's 99th, prevailed in one hour and 17 minutes over 25-year-old Boserup, world's number 97th. She scored five aces made five double faults to Boserup's three aces and as many double faults.
For her performance so far, Tig has won 13,690 US dollars and 40 WTA singles points. In the opening round on the main draw, she will meet another qualifier, Mariana Duque Marino (Colombia). Tig has a 2-1 advantage in her head-to-head with Duque Marino, 27, WTA's 112th, whom she defeated in the 2014 Monterrey qualifying round 7-5, 7-6 (5) and at Irapuato, Mexico, 6-1, 7-5, also in the preliminary round. The Colombian player defeated Tig in the qualifying round at Medellin 7-6 (4), 6-2.
Also making it to the main draw are four more Romanian players. Simona Halep, seeded fourth and the 2015 edition winner, will play directly in the second round with the winner of the Croat Dona Dona Vekic versus US Alison Riske fixture.
Begu, 29th seeded, has advanced directly to the second round, where she meets the winner of the US Louise Chirico versus Italian Francesca Schiavone fixture.
The remaining two Romanian players, Sorana Cirstea and Monica Niculescu, meet in the opening round.
In the women's doubles, Niculescu is paired up with US Christina McHale to play in the first round against top seed duo Bethanie Mattek-Sands (US)/Lucie Safarova (Czech Republic).
Raluca Olaru - Olga Savchuk plays their first match against Kiki Bertens (Netherlands)/Johanna Larsson (Sweden), and if victorious the pairing will meet the winner of the Mattek-Sands/Safarova - McHale/Niculescu fixture.
