Two aircraft of the Romanian Air Force, a C-130 Hercules and an AN-26, took off on Saturday from the 90th Air Transport Base bound for Yerevan, Armenia, to fly the first batch of the aid that Romania sends as free international aid to this country to support the civilian population affected by the conflict in the region, informs the Romanian Defence Ministry (MApN).

The Romanian Air Force has planned six flights on this route in which goods will be transported consisting of non-perishable food and munitions, of a total weight of approximately 9,000 kg, taken out from the reserves of the National Administration of State Reserves and Special Issues (ANRSPS).

"The transport missions are carried out on under Civil Protection Mechanism of the European Union at the request of the Department for Emergency Management under Decision of the National Committee on Emergency Management 35 of 2023," according to MApN.

The European Union will double its humanitarian aid for Armenia to EUR 10.4 million, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen announced on Thursday.
