Seamen with Naval Forces mark in Iasi birth of Eminescu and commemorate railway tragedy of 1917

The representatives of the Naval Forces will carry out for two days a series of activities in northeastern Iasi County for the marking of the 169th anniversary of the birth of the poet Mihai Eminescu, as well as the commemoration of 102 years since the greatest railway catastrophe in Romania, according to a press release of the Naval Forces.

On Monday, the seamen will carry out a series of extra-curricular activities with pupils from the National College "Mihai Eminescu".

"The interactive program will bring to the attention of Iasi pupils and seamen the contribution of national poet Mihai Eminescu to the development of the Romanian culture on the occasion of the 169th birthday of the great poet. At the same time, the seamen will also disclose to pupils a few secrets of their training drills at sea and will also present to them the benefits of their career in the Naval Forces. At the end of the meeting, the seamen will invite the students to attend the ceremony organized on Tuesday by the Brigade 15 'Podul Inalt' (High Bridge) to mark the birthday of national poet Mihai Eminescu, at his Linden Tree in Copou Park," the press release states.

According to the document, the seamen will commemorate Tuesday, in Ciurea commune, the biggest railway catastrophe in Romania, which took place on 13 January 1917 in Iasi County.

"In mid-January 1917, the largest railway disaster in Romania occurred, in which approximately 1,000 people lost their lives, including Marine Commander Alexandru Catuneanu. The tragedy took place near the train station in Ciurea, amid a crisis situation in World War I. In order to pay tribute to the victims of this catastrophe, the General Staff of the Naval Forces, Brigade 15 'Podul Inalt' and the local and county public authorities are organizing a military and religious ceremony on Tuesday at the gymnasium school in Lunca Cetatuii village, Ciurea commune. On this occasion, the representative of the Naval Forces Chief of Staff, Cornel Rogozan, the fleet Counter-Admiral, will grant the school in the commune the name "Commander Alexandru Catuneanu", a distinguished personality of the Romanian Military Navy, who contributed to the development of hydrography, cartography and oceanography in Romania," the press release of the Naval Forces specifies.
