The writer Radu Vancu will represent Romania, with the support of the Romanian Cultural Institute in Warsaw, at the 10th edition of the International Literature Festival Odesa (ILO), which has become itinerant following the war in Ukraine.
The ILO 2025 edition will take place in Poland, from February 22 to 28, and will transform the Potocki Palace in Krakow's Main Market Square into a space for dialogue and reflection for 22 writers from 13 countries, authors known both for the success of their books and for the strength and clarity of their civic voices.
On February 26, the Romanian writer will meet the public at a literary event dedicated to his book "Kaddish", with Polish poet and translator Jakub Kornhauser as a dialogue partner, ICR announced on Friday.
Along with Radu Vancu, writers from Ukraine, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Belgium, Austria, Austria, Lithuania, Estonia, Peru, Spain, Switzerland and the Netherlands will give public readings and participate in debates. They will be joined by important names in contemporary Polish literature such as Adam Michnik, Andrzej Stasiuk, Urszula Honek, Klementyna Suchanow and Jakub Malecki.
The ILO 2025 program comprises 25 events with writers who will be present both in person and online, exploring themes including the relationship between Eastern and Western Europe, the future of Europe, the freedom of the writer and writing, and the power of words in the fight against barbarism.
The public readings and debates, which will take place in English, German, Ukrainian, Romanian, Polish and Ukrainian, with translation, will take place between February 24 and 28.
Ukrainian literature will be the subject of the readings on February 24, exactly three years after the outbreak of the war, with the event to include a public reading of poems by Ukrainian writers Victoria Amelina and Maksym Kryvtsov, killed in the war, performed by Ukrainian authors Yuri Andrukhovych and Andei Kurkov and Italian writer Francesca Melandri.
Founded in 2015, the Odessa International Literary Festival aims to highlight the city's cultural effervescence and international character and to help strengthen its ties with other cultural metropolises in Europe and on other continents. So far, almost 300 writers have taken part in the festival. Hans Ruprecht and Ulrich Schreiber have coordinated the festival since its inception.
