Artificial intelligence will never be able to replace areas related to human interaction, such as emotional intelligence, Adelina Stoienescu, an expert at the Supervision of Payments and Payment Instruments Division at the National Bank of Romania (BNR), said on Thursday at a specialist conference.
"It is interesting to see, from our perspective, everything that the market means and how the market thinks and those who develop artificial intelligence. I like that they are very positive in the way things go. It also scares me at the same time, because we at the central bank have seen quite a few cases of artificial intelligence used in cases of fraud. You would say and swear that it is, that my mother called me today and that she asked me for some money. To us, artificial intelligence is a challenge and will remain a challenge all the time. And it will remain a challenge once from the perspective of the ethics with which it is used and secondly from the perspective of limitations, how much you could limit the use of artificial intelligence. Without a doubt, it is an instrument without which neither we, as regulators, nor the market can live today. They are processes, they are a bunch of elements that are made much easier with artificial intelligence. It is true that they also have a much higher degree of accuracy sometimes, but we still end up with human intervention and the one who works and it depends on where he or she learns", said Stoienescu, at the conference "Real Risks 2025 - Banking & Entrepreneurship in the AI era."
She added that BNR uses artificial intelligence for processes that require repetitive activities, a large volume of information, for statistical data.
"We are now trying to implement, we have not implemented, for everything that means security measures, extraction of essential elements in the documentation issued by credit institutions. We try to make our lives easier, and your life easier, especially the banks, not to come back to them all the time with certain information or requests. I never see artificial intelligence being able to replace areas related to human interaction. I will never see it, I don't think that artificial intelligence will replace emotional intelligence, for example."
The BNR expert added that AI could help a psychologist, but it will not become a decision-making element. It will also not be able to replace human creativity. The music made now with AI does not have the same message, Stoenescu said.
For his part, Gabriel Niculescu, an expert at the National Directorate of Cyber Security, said that AI is already used by attackers, as well as by those in charge of defence. In the future it is expected to be used increasingly more, and the big problem with using AI is that "people with less and less knowledge will be able to use it to launch quite sophisticated and coordinated attacks."
Bogdan Putinica, executive general manager of Wonderful Central, Eastern, South Europe, mentioned that AI has made significant progress lately.
"Exactly a year ago, being able to make computer software using another computer, this AI, was an imperfect process. Let's move from computer software to a cake, because it's easier to describe. You could make a cake, but the cream won't thicken. And you had to call a chef and take other ingredients, tell him "please do it again", if you had time and money and availability. Today we are at the end of October, there are multiple options to make these cakes, software, in their entirety," said Putinica.
Oxygen Events organised on Thursday the conference "Real Risks 2025 - Banking & Entrepreneurship in the Age of AI", a day dedicated to trust, innovation and prudence in a world driven by algorithms.
