The celebration, in Romania and the Republic of Moldova, of Romanian Language Day on August 31, will see a host of events organized at the Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR) branches around the world, such as those in Chisinau, Vienna and Tel Aviv, the ICR announced.
The string of events consists of public readings, art exhibitions, film screenings, musical recitals and literary debates, all aimed at promoting the Romanian language worldwide and at strengthening the cultural links between Romania and its diaspora communities.
Visitors can enjoy a substantial offer of major literature, literary criticism, history and arts titles on display at the ICR Publishing House stand at the Bookfest Chisinau International Book Fair (August 28 - September 1).
ICR Madrid organizes on August 30 the screening of the documentary dedicated to writer Liviu Rebreanu "Great classic authors: Liviu Rebreanu" by Lavinia Moldovan and produced by the Bistrita-Nasaud Museum Complex. The event is part of the program "ICR Madrid Library's Recommendations For You".
ICR Warsaw and the Embassy of Romania in the Republic of Poland, in cooperation with the "Quality" private school in Krakow will celebrate those who have chosen to study Romanian as a foreign language by organizing on August 31 a meeting with students from ICR Warsaw and from the "Quality" School - the only private educational institution in Poland that has been offering a permanent program of courses of Romanian as a foreign language since 2008. Also invited are students from universities with a long tradition of Romanian language courses, respectively the Jagiellonian University, where Romanian has been studied since 1921, and the "Adam Mickiewicz" University in Poznan (U.A.M), which has been organizing Romanian language courses without interruption since 1957. Students of the Romanian language chairs at the University of Lódz and Warsaw, readers and professors will also attend.
The Accademia di Romania in Rome (ARR) offers the Italian public a series of short video interviews with some of the most active participants in the courses organized by ARR. The screening of the videoclip "Cosa ti piace della Romania" will take place on Saturday and consists of a series of interviews designed to reflect the Romania-related experience of the students, and at the same time provide a testimony of the expression and conversation skills acquired during the course.
The Romanian Institute of Culture and Humanistic Research in Venice will host a recital by pianist Sanziana Mircea, followed by literary moments with Bianca Cojocaru, Tudor Iancu, Antonio Iannone and Federica Lolli, all graduates of the Institute's Romanian Language Course, in collaboration with Iulia Cosma, the Romanian language reader at the University of Padua. The event, scheduled for August 31, will see poem recitals from the writings of Mihai Eminescu, Tudor Arghezi, Lucian Blaga, Nina Cassian and Ana Blandiana, in Romanian and in their Italian rendition.
ICR Vienna, in collaboration with the Embassy of Romania in the Republic of Austria, the Vienna-based "Mihai Eminescu" Association, the Mures County Directorate for Culture, and the Resurrection of the Lord and St. Apostle Andrew Church, will be organizing a series of cultural events on August 31. The venues are the institute's headquarters, Eminescu's Linden Tree in Wiener Stadtpark, and Eminescu's bust located in front of the said Romanian church.
On September 2, ICR Tel Aviv is hosting at its headquarters an event dedicated to the work and personality of Panait Istrati, whom Marin Sorescu considered to be "the first Solzhenitsyn in European literature".
Also, ICR Istanbul organized on Thursday an event at the Musurus Pasha mansion, the headquarters of ICR "Dimitrie Cantemir" in Istanbul, with presentations given by professor Jenny Marilena Sisli, where participants had the opportunity to learn some Romanian words by active interaction.
ICR Lisbon, with the support of the Embassy of Romania in Portugal and the Romanian Language Institute, organized on August 24 the traditional Literary Marathon, with children and young people aged 7 to 20 as protagonists. The event was dedicated to prestigious author Ion Creanga, marking the 135th anniversary of his death, and included readings in Portuguese from his writings, as translated by Simona Vermeire and Jose Fonseca e Silva.
On Romanian Language Day, the Romanian Cultural Institute will announce the winners of the essay, story and composition contest "I and Romania", themed "Romanian Language Is My Homeland". 59 children from 14 countries participated in the competition organized by the Romanian Cultural Institute between July 1 - August 10.
Romanian Language Day was officially established in Romania in 2013, and represents an opportunity to reflect on the cultural and historical value of the Romanian language. In the Republic of Moldova, Romanian Language Day was officially created in 1990, as an expression of the national revival and the return to Romanian cultural values, after the Soviet period during which the Romanian language was marginalized.
