Romania spent 54.7 million lei to come to the aid of the refugees, Romanian Government Spokesman Dan Carbunaru said at the end of the Government meeting on Wednesday.

"The Government is in permanent contact with the European Commission. In respect to the calculations our country is making, aimed at being reimbursed the expenses made on supporting refugees in Romania, there are daily updates regarding this spending. We are currently speaking of 54.7 million lei Romania spent to come to the aid of refugees. Among the ministries in charge, on the Prime Minister's Chancellery level, all these amounts are centralised and they will be forwarded to the European Commission, which is currently working on the mechanisms for each type of reimbursement on expenses we need," Carbunaru told a press conference at the Victoria Governmental Palace.

Carbunaru brought to mind that several members of the European Commission had been paying visits to Romania those days to support the country in managing the situation generated by the arrival of a large number of refugees.

"As such, even the visit of European Commissioner Lenarcic [Janez Lenarcic - European Commissioner for Crisis Management] ranges within these efforts the European Commission has been making, to be by the side of the member states, Romania and Poland in particular, which are affected by the waves of refugees from Ukraine. The Commissioner for Home Affairs, as well as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen have recently been in Romania, to check what is going on and to make sure they will take measures to support the countries managing this situation," Carbunaru said.
