President Klaus Iohannis visited on Wednesday Gorée Island, off the coast of Senegal, a UNESCO heritage site and former outpost for the slave trade.

On this occasion, the head of state had a meeting with local officials, visited the "Maison des Esclaves" and the Mariama Ba Boarding School, agerpres reports.

"We cannot change history, but we can learn important lessons from it and the sad, inhuman and immoral history this place has had must inspire us, politicians, to get involved, to learn from this sad past to build a much better future for the people and perhaps, the most important thing to learn from this is that we have to get involved and fight for human rights, because we are all equal and, in the same way, I believe it is extremely important to learn to respect each other, because it's not enough to consider ourselves equal, we have to consider and respect each other. I wish you to preserve this monument of a sad history and through those who visit you to succeed to build a brighter future for your community, for the African community," said the president, after visiting the Slave House, according to images published by the Presidential Administration.

President Klaus Iohannis received a pilgrim's diploma on the island of Gorée from local officials.

The head of state has been on an official visit to Senegal since Tuesday. Klaus Iohannis ends Thursday his tour in Africa, which began on November 13 with a state visit to Kenya. The head of state has also paid state visits to Tanzania and Cape Verde.

President Klaus Iohannis will be received on Thursday by his Senegalese counterpart, Macky Sall. He will also attend the inauguration of the United Nations House in Senegal and the opening of the exhibition "Traditional African Masks - Traditional Romanian Masks", organised in cooperation with the Romanian Peasant Museum.
