The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) issued on Thursday an extreme Code Red valid for Friday and Saturday in 12 counties in the west and southwest of the country, while the rest of the territory will be under Code Orange.
According to meteorologists, the heat wave, which started on Monday (July 31st), will continue to intensify on Friday (August 4th) and Saturday (August 5th), and the thermal discomfort will become particularly acute. The temperature-humidity Index (ITU) will exceed the 80-unit critical threshold and will frequently range between 82 and 84 units in lower relief areas. Minimum temperatures will generally range from 22 to 25 Celsius degrees.
Moreover, in the plains and plateaus of Satu Mare, Bihor, Arad, Timis, Caras-Severin, Salaj, Cluj, Mures, Alba, Hunedoara, Mehedinti and Dolj counties, maximum extreme temperatures will be recorded comparable to the absolute records of the period, varying between 39 and 42 degrees Celsius.
On the other hand, on Friday and Saturday, there will be an Code Orange for heat in Moldova, Dobrogea, Muntenia and locally in Maramures, Transylvania and Oltenia. In these regions, the maximum temperatures will generally range between 36 and 39 degrees, far higher values than the climatic averages specific to the period.
The ANM states that gradually, the heat wave will narrow to the southern regions and will persist until the middle of next week. The degree of atmospheric instability will be increasing, especially in mountain areas and in the northern half of the country.
