The Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) announced that it will file a complaint with the Constitutional Court today against the Law on the payment of private pensions, adopted on Wednesday by the Chamber of Deputies.
According to AUR, through this project "the Bolojan Government is stealing Romanians' pensions from the second and third pillars".
"If it were a legislative project truly for the good of taxpayers, AUR parliamentarians would have voted 'for' its adoption, but the legislative initiative represents only a perfidious attempt by the ruling parties to steal the hard-earned money of Romanian taxpayers. In the current form of the legislative project, those who are the real beneficiaries of the changes are, first of all, the fund administrators who will collect commissions of 0.21%-0.27%, earning as much money as possible if they remain in the accounts as long as possible. And, secondly, the main winner is the Romanian state which has found a lifeline for a system that constantly borrows, without limits, at huge interest rates," says an AUR press release sent to AGERPRES on Thursday.
The pension system has functioned for almost two decades with clear rules and Romanians have contributed to it with confidence to ensure "a peaceful retirement," explains AUR.
"Now, what we see is a clear violation of both the Romanians' trust and an illegitimate takeover of control over sums of money and a punishment of those who have worked honestly and put money aside. Instead of providing security, the adopted law reduces the control that Romanians have over their own money and generates a dangerous precedent: the rules can be changed at any time, even before you receive the rights for which you have contributed a lifetime," adds AUR.
The Chamber of Deputies plenary adopted on Wednesday the draft law on the payment of private pensions, the main regulation being that people who opt to withdraw money from Pillar 2 - the mandatory privately administered pillar - will initially receive only 30% of the amount and the rest spread over eight years and, as an exception, patients with oncological diseases can benefit from the entire amount through a single withdrawal.
