The Government approved, on Thursday, through a decision, a Romanian-Hungarian Protocol regarding the quality of border waters, namely the Protocol of the 36th Session of the Romanian-Hungarian Hydrotechnical Commission, signed in Baile 1 Mai on May 9, 2025, for the implementation of the Agreement between the Government of Romania and the Government of the Republic of Hungary on cooperation for the protection and sustainable use of border waters, signed in Budapest on September 15, 2003.
According to a Government release, the decisions included in this Protocol will contribute to protecting the quality of border waters, enhancing flood protection measures and ensuring the sustainable management of border waters, benefiting the environment, local communities and citizens of both countries.
The Protocol stipulates, among other things: "continuing the assessment of the quality of border waters based on the results of physio-chemical and biological analyses from 2024; continuing joint flow measurements on border waters to improve quantitative water management; continuing mutual information activities regarding cross-border groundwater bodies in the Integrated Management Plan of the Tisza River Basin; continuing the development of flood protection regulations for watercourses and internal waters; supporting joint projects and monitoring ongoing projects under the bilateral Agreement."
The Protocol also mentions that the Romanian side requested information from the Hungarian side regarding the project to expand shale gas extraction through hydraulic fracturing in Bekes County, Hungary, and, in turn, provided information on the status of the construction of intervention sections on floating platforms, as well as the legislative measures taken at the national level, according to the release.
