The Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) believes that the call-out of the missile defence system in Deveselu "is completely irrelevant" in the current context related to the agreement on intermediate-range nuclear missiles (Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty - INF Treaty), because the system in Deveselu is not the subject of it.
"The MAE believes, once again, that the aggressive rhetoric is unjustified and counterproductive. In addition, the MAE stance regarding the NATO ballistic missile defence (BMD) that includes the Deveselu facility hasn't changed," the MAE release shows.
Furthermore, the Ministry brought to mind having mentioned "numerous times that the entire concept of the NATO missile defence system has a purely defensive character and represent an action proportionate to the current threats, which observes all the international commitments."
"The Russian Federation received all the necessary guarantees and explanations in this regard, both from Romania and NATO," the MAE highlights.
Russian President Vladimir Putin warned on Wednesday that "the main problem represents a possible withdrawal of the US from the INF Treaty, adding that Russia will have to come up with a symmetric response if missile are to be placed in Europe.
The European countries accepting the placement of the US strategic missile on their soil will have to understand that they find themselves on a territory under the thereat of a possible retaliation, according to the Russian President, who also mentioned his hope of tackling this topic with US President Donald Trump, on the occasion of their meeting on 11 November.
US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday the US's intention to withdraw from the INF Treaty, arguing that Russia repeatedly breached, throughout the years, the provisions of the treaty.
