Archaeologists of the National Museum of Banat in Timisoara have recently brought to light historical remains dating from the early Neolithic period (about 5950-5850 BC) to the modern period, identifying a metallurgical area in the Recas area, inform agerpres.ro.
Among the metallurgical structures discovered, a furnace used in the reduction of iron ore was selected for in situ collection and subsequently transported to the National Museum of Banat for research and possible display in one of the future exhibitions, said a Facebook post on Friday.
The traces were discovered last week, during the archaeological research carried out on the seventh archaeological site identified on the route of the future East Timisoara - Lugoj railway line. In parallel with the railroad construction process, MNB is also working on the documentation and collection of the remains affected by the investment project.
The site of Izvin - site 6 (town of Recas) stood out by the identification of a metallurgical area dating, most probably, from the middle of the 1st millennium BC. The identified structures will help archaeologists to better understand the stages of iron processing in the area of the Banat plain, from the production of the necessary coal to reduce the iron ore to the actual processing of the resulting ingots.
