The world needs more nuclear energy, the CEO of Nuclearelectrica, Cosmin Ghita told Wednesday's debate dubbed "Does Nuclear Energy Have a Future in Europe?" held in Bucharest.

He emphasized the key-role of government funding in facing the challenges in the energy sector.

"The world needs more nuclear energy", pointed out Ghita. "When I talk about government support, on the one hand we have the funding and on the other hand there is the re-regulation of the entire ecosystem, to get things back on track", he said.

The CEO of Nuclearelectrica emphasized that this type of project involving nuclear energy "needs a whole-of-society approach".

"That is why we need a clear direction and consensus, despite the political successions, and to make sure that everyone is dedicated to the project, ready to start, for a new regulation, for a reconfiguration and for investments," he added.

The event in Bucharest was organized by the Embassy of Poland, in the context in which this country is holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union until mid-year.

Thus, Polish Ambassador Pawel Soloch conveyed the message of the Polish Secretary of State for Strategic Energy Infrastructure, Wojciech Wrochna.

According to Wrochna, nuclear energy is a topical and important topic.

"The unprovoked war on Ukraine and the attack on an independent and sovereign state have created a security situation of such severity that the world has not seen since World War II. The energy crisis, caused by Russia's brutal policy, shows us that if we want to stay on the path to decarbonization and security of supply, we must change the European way of thinking in these areas," the official said.

He added that the nuclear solution improves energy independence and helps reduce demand for natural gas.

"We consider that small modular reactors (SMRs) represent a complementary technology to large conventional reactors (...). Poland, like the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, has faced challenges in terms of energy transition and climate change. The European ambitions regarding the green energy strategy and the climate neutrality target in 2050 are a great challenge for other countries. That is why Poland and countries that have the same approach have established an alliance in the field of nuclear energy, to promote nuclear energy and improve its development and distribution in Europe", said Wojciech Wrochna.
