Romania pleads for a unitary, coherent and fair strategy within the future negotiations regarding the UK leaving the European Union (EU), stated Minister-delegate for European Affairs Ana Birchall, who is paying a working visit to Austria.
The Romanian official had a series of meetings with Austrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Integration Sebastian Kurz, Advisor on foreign policy of Austria's Chancellor Bernhard Wrabetz, Secretary-General for Foreign Affairs of Austria Michael Linhart and Director of Diplomatic Academy of Vienna Hans Winkler.
According to a press release sent to agerpres. by the Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE), within the meetings topical matters of mutual interest for the two states, that feature on the European agenda were discussed, such as: negotiations regarding Brexit, financial multi-annual framework, migration and Schengen space functioning, the EU Strategy for the Danube region, Western Balkans, Eastern Partnership, as well as the importance of strengthening the cooperation in order for Austria to consecutively take over the presidency of the Council of the EU, in the second semester of 2018, and Romania holding the office in the first semester of 2019.
"Romania pleads for a unitary, coherent and fair strategy within the future negotiations regarding the UK leaving the EU. In respect to the future relation between the EU 27 and the UK, we will follow, as a priority, for a balanced agreement to be ensured, in which all the four freedoms of the Single Market, including the free movement of persons/workers to be reflected in an objective and equitable manner. Romanian citizens, alongside European citizens must benefit fully from all the rights and freedoms granted by the treaties. Furthermore, I reiterated that for the EU it's essential that the detachment of the UK must be carefully managed, so that the impact over the EU budget can be attenuated," Ana Birchall stated.
Regarding the debates on the future of Europe, Birchall and Kurz revealed that Romania and Austria oppose to the idea of a EU with multiple speeds or formalizing a Europe with concentric circles, the release points out.
The Schengen area was one of the topics tackled within the meeting with Michael Linhart, the Vienna official reiterated Austria's support for Romania's accession to Schengen.
The Romanian official reiterated within the discussion with Advisor for foreign policy of Austria's Chancellor Bernhard Wrabetz, our country's commitment to efficiently implement the EU Strategy for the Danube region, and within the meeting with Director of the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, Ana Birchall underscored Romania's interest and openness for deepening the cooperation with this institution.
