President Klaus Iohannis said Friday that he and Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu were on the same page when discussing the future of the European Union in front of European leaders, adding that the Rome European summit does not need to be discussed in Parliament. "For the time being I have not been asked for a meeting [by Prime Minister Grindeanu], but we are discussing the matters and I can say that so far we have been on the same page when before the European politicians and that is how we will do," Iohannis said at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace.
He added that the forthcoming European summit in Rome does not need to be discussed by Parliament. "There is nothing to be discussed in Parliament about the Rome Summit. Some are trying to get to the fore although that is none of their business. Every politician in Romania's Parliament and the European Parliament should have a high interest in Romania's European journey, but how Romania shows up there, Romania's points of view, all this is discussed by the president and the prime minister, because it is the president that represents Romania at the European Council and the government at various levels of the council's summits, so it is important for a joint approach to exist, an approach discussed and agreed upon by the presidency and the government. Under the legislation in force, Romania's Parliament does not need to be asked for an agreement on what we say at the European summits and the European Council," said Iohannis.
He pointed out that the Rome Declaration is a statement of intentions without being legally binding or seen as a directive. "After the summit in Rome, when talks on the future of the EU are officially started; I want to gather all the politicians in one place and make them join various discussion formats, including in Parliament, including the civil society and European policy specialists in order to work out the best formula to represent Romania's interest," added Iohannis. He went on to say that an adequate wording of the Rome Declaration will be sought that will secure the signatures of all the EU member states.
