Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, WTA's 2nd and main seed of the tournament, qualified on Thursday for the quarterfinals of the WTA tournament in Washington, with total prize money worth 226,750 USD, after she defeated Mariana Duque Marino (Colombia) in three sets 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Simona secured a 6,200-USD cheque and 60 WTA points and will play in the quarterfinals against Russian Ekaterina Makarova, who won to Puerto Rican Monica Puig, 6-2, 6-4. Halep has 3-1 in direct matches with Makarova (29, WTA's 58th).
