The problems of the budget deficit must be approached very seriously and balanced solutions must be found, measures through which society can be shown that any sacrifice regarding the reduction of the budget deficit brings, in the medium and long term, well-being and hope for every person, for every family, declared the president of the UDMR, Kelemen Hunor, after consultations with president Nicuşor Dan at the Cotroceni Palace.
"In the first part, we discussed the budget issues, the challenges regarding the budget deficit, and then we discussed a little about the possibility of forming a government with majority support in Parliament. I said that at this moment, the budget deficit issues must be approached very seriously and we must find balanced solutions, because the first challenge is to bring in additional revenues this year, almost 30 billion, if we want to reach a deficit of 7%. And this cannot be done either by increasing taxes or fees, or by cutting expenses. Just going in one direction or another would mean an imbalance that would also mean tensions in society. A balanced approach is needed and we must find those measures through which, in the medium term, in the long term, we can show society that any sacrifice regarding the reduction of the budget deficit brings, in the medium term and in the long term, well-being and hope for every person, for every family," supported by Kelemen Hunor.
He added that applied discussions with specialists from political parties are to follow, most likely starting on Thursday.
"Applied discussions with the specialists of the political parties will follow, probably starting tomorrow, where we will discuss all aspects, including those related to taxes and duties and the reduction of expenses in the administrative-budgetary apparatus, especially in the central administration, but we will not be able to avoid the other aspects related to exaggerated or very often insufficiently justified expenses. We must be aware that reducing investments is not a solution to maintain the economy. These public investments must remain, but a renegotiation with the PNRR Commission is needed, in the sense of moving amounts to where there are mature projects and where investments can be made by the end of the PNRR implementation period, that is, next year - August 2026. (...) We are prepared to enter into these discussions starting tomorrow and we are willing to assume both governance and, of course, the responsibility of governance, for better or for worse, if there is a solution found together with the other parties that want to come to government," emphasized Kelemen Hunor.
The UDMR leader also pointed out that a detailed political agreement will be needed on the measures that will be agreed upon and reaffirmed that a majority coalition is needed, because a minority government is not a good solution.
"I argued that a majority coalition is needed. A minority government is not a solution today, it is not a good option. The number one priority for each of us must be to have a government with majority parliamentary support - that means PSD, PNL, USR, UDMR, the group of national minorities. And we will discuss this with our colleagues from the other political parties. I argued that we need a very detailed political agreement, in which we write what we do and when we do it, including on the taxation side and state reform. And we must write what we will not do, until this coalition works. A very detailed coalition agreement is a guarantee that in difficult conditions, in this extremely difficult situation, a coalition can work.
It will take 10 days - two weeks for the discussions to be finalized, but no sooner than two weeks, he emphasized.
"I am convinced that if we start the debates, the discussions this week first on the economy, on taxation, then on the political side, then we can send a message. First of all, to our society and, after that, to our external partners, including the European Commission, that there is the decision, the desire and the determination of the coalition to make those corrections without which Romania, the long-term environment, cannot function, because we have excessively high and comparably lower incomes, to be very honest," explained Kelemen Hunor.
He announced that next week there will be a detailed discussion, including the coalition and the political part of the coalition. AGERPRES
