Poultry breeders in Romania request the authorities to unilaterally ban imports of poultry products from Ukraine, following the model of other member states in the vicinity of this country, in the conditions in which these imports put farmers in our country in a difficult situation, reducing their competitiveness, as well as the viability of farms, informs Agerpres.

According to a press release from the Romanian Poultry Breeders' Union (UCPR), the measure is necessary to stabilize the egg and poultry meat market and prevent even more serious economic shocks with a long-term effect.

In addition, the poultry breeding sector, as a primary production sector, is considered the engine of the development of agriculture and the economy in general. Thus, the bankruptcy of farms in Romania will not only affect the internal supply chain of poultry products, but also the number of jobs, the state budget, local budgets and the budgets of other public institutions.

Farmers claim that some poultry products, as well as biological material (hatching eggs or live birds), raise suspicions and may endanger the entire poultry industry by spreading zoonoses.

The import of fresh eggs for consumption in Romania from Ukraine, in the first six months of 2024, reached 534 tons, a 48% increase compared to the same period of 2023, with import prices below those of Romanian eggs, but with a downward trend during the period, from an average of 0.12 euro cents per egg in January 2024 to around 0.6 - 0.7 euro cents per egg in July - August 2024, as the information received from farmers read.

According to the data of the Union of Poultry Breeders, the import of poultry meat, refrigerated and frozen, in Romania from Ukraine, in the first 6 months of 2024, reached about 4,000 tons, compared to only 78 tons imported in the same period of 2021, with significant growth potential in the second semester of 2024.
