Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos on Friday conveyed condolences on the death of Romanian Olympic high jumper Iolanda Balas.
"Iolanda Balas - Romania's first Olympic who improved the world record 14 times - passed away today. Condolences to all her close friends, to those who loved and admired her," Ciolos said in a Facebook post on Friday. Balas died on Friday aged 79. Iolanda Balas-Soter is the first Romanian track and field athlete to win in the Olympic Games, and also the country's only two-time such athlete to win the Olympic champion title. She improved the high jump world record 14 times, 12 of which in succession, won the Olympic champion title twice, the European champion title three times (and a bronze medal), 3 Universiade champion title, 9 Balkan champion titles and 19 national champion titles.
