Prime Minister Mihai Tudose said on Monday, at private TV broadcaster Antena 3, that as regards the national vaccination programme, there have been identified issues such as the lack of involvement of doctors, the low awareness among the population about the risks of non-vaccination, adding that solutions are being sought in relation to parents who are "obstinate" on this subject, to be implemented in the new law on vaccination, one solution taken into account being the termination of parental rights for those who refuse vaccination.

The Prime Minister also stressed the importance of the public awareness campaign about the risks to which children are exposed through non-vaccination, a campaign carried out lately through the mass media and the social networks.

"I thank all the televisions, all the media channels, including the newly created world of Facebook, of electronic communication, which has become very active in supporting this demarche and having an extraordinary effect, has actually begun to increase the percentage [of vaccinations - ed.n.] in the last two weeks (...) because thanks to you, to those wonderful people who have understood that it is their duty as Romanians to convince as many as possible that it is not a whim, that diseases have been eradicated in this world by mere vaccination," Tudose stated.

"For the time being, I think we have to go beyond the next two stages, the first, the awareness raising and the second, of the doctors' sustained effort," Tudose said

"We are trying to find some procedures that will yield results, and we are currently discussing with some child protection specialists ... a parent may have his/her rights terminated even if the parent does not treat the child for a cold or the flu and then, the Child Protection intervenes and saves the child. I believe this is eventually the way to go. One cannot say that he/she is a parent, one has three children, and say: 'I will not vaccinate them because my children will not get sick.' They generally do get sick," PM Tudose further said.
