Strategikon to hold Good Governance Summit in Romania

A summit meeting dealing with current challenges against good governance in a global context will be held in Romania, May 4-5, by the Strategikon think tank, according to a press statement released on Wednesday by the organisation.

The summit is designed to discuss essential aspects affecting global governance and put forth solutions to political and business leaders as well as their teams.

Strategikon honorary Chairman MEP Ioan Mircea Pascu says governance performance makes the difference in a global context that is complex and uncertain.

"Good governance is an umbrella concept with an impact on all the domestic and external instruments any modern state uses in order to meet an increasing number of global challenges. We can say that in such a complex and uncertain context governance performance is what makes the difference; there lies the key that makes the difference between a functional and a failed state. Both the capability of drawing foreign funds, for instance, and resilience to security threats depend on good governance," says Pascu.

Strategikon board official Harlan Ullman argues that the Islamic State, global terrorism, climate change or the prospect for a new Cold War in Europe or a thawed war in the Korea Peninsula are not as great threats against peace as failed states or states about to fail are.

"In its first major conference, Strategikon aims to analyse the good governance deficits and explore ways to settle or minimise excesses or threats that such states poses to the global order. We believe this is just one of the many opportunities for us to leave a positive imprint on improving the life quality of those affected by the absence of good governance," Ulmann is quoted as saying.

As far as the lay of the land is concerned in Romania, Strategikon Deputy Chairs Cornel Visoianu and Radu Magdin remark that Romania is a regional player that has not reached its full potential.

"Romania is a regional player that, despite a successful transition toward democracy and joining the EU and NATO more than one decade ago, has not lived up to its full potential yet. This can change in the context of Romania holding the rotating presidency of the European Council in 2019. It is important that steps are already being taken for an image and thinking offensive that will consolidate Romania's global profile. Our conference is designed to contribute to the global idea market by discussing models for good governance that can be successfully applied in various regions of the world," according to the two senior officials.

The statement says that addressing the Good Governance summit will be former CIA Director General David Petraeus; former Commander, US Supreme Allied Command Europe Philip Breedlove; former Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz; former US Permanent Representative to NATO Kurt Volker; former Speaker of the UK House of Lords Robert Salisbury; UAE ambassador to the US Yousef Al Otaiba; former Chief of the UK Defence Staff David Richards; entrepreneur, financier and a former adviser to Donald Trump's presidential campaign Anthony Scaramucci; Director of the Institute for US and Canadian Studies Sergey Rogov, as well as Kuwaiti former Minister for Planning and Development Rola Dashti. Joining them will be prestigious Romanian officials and foreign experts.
